Shoot me, but I prefer the 60's. Okay, Mud was successful in the 70's and the 70's have had some great bands, but to me it all started to go wrong when disco came out and this sort of meant the end of glitter rock... I'm not into disco - never have been - so in general I prefer the 60's. But after the 60's I go for the 70's. Much better music as in the 80's, 90's and what's in today's hitparade.

Great music, school days and long hot summers. Those are my memories of the 70s. The period 1972-1976 was pure magic musically. I will never forget the summer of '76 with the droughts and stand pipes in some streets and I got my first case of sunstroke on the school palying fields.

There has never been a period like it for music though. I know what you mean about the 60s, but I was just a toddler so for me it has to be Mud, Sweet, Suzi Quatro, et al. And weren't there a lot of great acts on RAK?

I totally agree - 80's & 90's weren't good at all. I hate all this house, dance, rap and stuff like that. Most singers can't even play their instruments properly.

But there's one 70's band that can't even mime properly - I once saw Boney M (with Bobby) 'live' at an oldie festival. All acts played live, but somehow Boney M didn't. Bobby was terrible at dancing and the girls behind him, who had to mime the female vocals, couldn't mime: you saw their lips moving when you didn't hear anyone singing and you did not see their lips moving when you heard the female voices. Really pathetic gig that was...

The list of awsome 70s bands and singers could go on for ever. Of course some of these acts are still doing the rounds in one form or another. Alas, so many, like Les, have left us. One of my own personal favs was Alex Harvey - a true entertainer and a great loss.

But their music lives on. I have been having a bit of a 70s revival of my own lately with the sounds of the Glitter Band, Sparks, SAHB and several others blasting from my car as I go to and from work each day.

Mud and Slade were my favourites and I would just love for Slade to re-form, if only for a final 'goodbye' tour, which they never did.
However, of all the bands I saw live in the 70's, the worst had to be the Glitter Band. I saw them at the Orchid Ballroom in Purley (just south of Croydon) with some of the guys from Mud's roadcrew. They were AWFUL. Whilst the playing wasn't too bad, the singing was. They may have been session musicians but they couldn't sing. Shows what can be done in a recording studio, even in those days. I remember chatting to someone from their record company (Bell) at the gig and he gave us free tickets to see Showaddywaddy the following night at the Victoria Palace in London. I suppose they were desperate to try and fill the place!!

The worst 70's bands I have seen 'live' were The Bay City Rollers (never one of my favourites tho' - and that's a soft way of putting it) and Boney M.

Les McKeown was drunk and the female backing singers from Boney M didn't know the lyrics to mime their 'live' concert - and add a weird dancing Bobby to that...
Embarrassing to see them both.

Although I like 60s music the glam rock perio is my favourite - Mud (of course) Sweet, Slade were the tops for me.
I like Mud for their irreverend attitude to showbiz. to me Les was taking the *** out of the music industry but having a good time doing so. Laughing

Sweet went to be more hard rock and the better for it. Action, Turn it down etc were just great. Ballroom blitz is another all timer. Cool

For Mud I like the singles but my favourite is musrock I on tape as the music seems to flow better in that order rather than the album order. Mudrck II as slightly disappointing as it was not to the same quality as far as party atmoshere is concerned. Sad

The later stuff with Priviate Stock and RCA were just as good but when Les left I lost interest but did follow his brief solo career.  Wink

It was a shame to hear he had died so young.
